Marriage-Womens Roles

Thesis

I would like to argue that articles from JWCE and EJ use different approaches towards explanation of womens roles in marriage and an overall idea of relations in a couple. In general, EJ offers a comprehensive overview of marriage and its roots, which also considers a fundamental role of women in the history. In fact, the following discussion is a comparative analysis of two articles, which provide significant information considering the womens role evaluation.

Analysis

The first article, which refers to marriage, provides a number of historical facts, which led to the development of the appropriate principles of marriage. The article refers to Bible as a source of information regarding marriage. It indicates that a man cannot have more than one wife. The article also discusses different aspects of marriage during various historical periods. In general, it is possible to outline that it discusses the core of marriage as the main historical change, which set the tone of human relations in general. In contrast to the article from JWCE, the author dedicates the discussion to the historical aspects of the development of marriage principles and obligations. The author analyzes marriage in the Rabbinic literature and provides various points of view on relations between a man and a woman.

According to the Jewish Women Encyclopedia, the article titled Marriage discusses contemporary rules of marriage and obligation of every party involved in the process. The author discusses women and men with the same equality according to the process of getting married. In fact, the article covers some historical aspects, which help understand the roots of the contemporary marriage principles. The article mentions that Jewish men did not have an opportunity to marry several women according to the law issued by Rabbenu Gershom in the eleventh century (Sherman). It allowed men to marry only after a divorce according to the agreement of wife or after death of the first wife. In addition, the article emphasizes that though the men and women perform different roles, they are equal to some extent. It means that there is a balance of obligations, which allows both parties living together in peace and understanding. Women obtain a significant attention from the author, who describes rights of women and their destiny from birth to death. In fact, there is an emphasized connection between a man and a woman as a couple.

The article written by Sherman mentions several historical figures, including Rabbi Gershom ben Judah Meor Ha-Golah and Moses ben Maimon (Sherman). Both historical figures helped outline the dependence between men and women in marriage from the points of a legal aspect. The article mentioned that specific events led to the formulation of the contemporary view on Jewish marriage and prescribed roles to men and women. In general, both historical figures helped in shaping the nature of relations between a husband and his wife, which defines aspects of living in a family. It is impossible to understand the core of marriage according to the traditions and principles of Jewish people and the history of shaping relations between men and women.

It is difficult to outline specific figures that changed the attitude of people to marriage in another article dedicated to marriage. In fact, the article also mentions some contributions of Rabbi Gershom ben Juddah Meor Ha-Golah, who argued about polygamy of marriage. However, the whole article has sections dedicated to several periods, which shaped an understanding of marriage thanks to the Bible, Medieval Ages, and the Contemporary period. In particular, the author mentions some figures from the Bible, including Samson, Levi, Laban, and others. In this way, the author helps the reader obtain a complex overview of the development of marriage values and principles.

The depictions of marriage in both articles are vivid enough to support the information received in the class. In particular, both articles have different approach towards explanation of human relations. For example, the article from JWCE explains roles and obligations in marriage. It describes the process of getting married and explains the roots of the contemporary marriage principles (Sherman). The second article, in its turn, describes the historical aspects of the formulation of traditions related to marriage. In fact, both articles provide in-depth information, which was partly covered in class. In general, both sources of information extended an overall understanding of marriage and responsibilities of women based on lectures and discussions in the class.

Overall Analysis

Both articles have the same approach towards describing marriage and obligations of women and men. The main difference lies in the methods used to explain roles of women and men. However, the result is the same, which proves that EJ article uses an in-depth approach to unveil all processes behind the contemporary marriage and marriage ceremony. Another article has a reflection of the results brought by the history, which means that the author decided to focus on the slightest details of the contemporary marriage without describing historical events. In general, both articles are useful for the improvement of personal worldview on marriage and its place in the life of every person. However, it is important to consider both articles in order to understand the historical events and their consequences, which led to the formulation of the contemporary marriage traditions.

According to the article written by Sherman, it is possible to understand the nature of the Jewish marriage due to the mentioning of some historical figures. However, it is possible to see the result of the historical changes, which do not show the full picture of the historical events involving other outstanding individuals. The author managed to provide general information of the historical events, which led to the formulation of the appropriate principles of living.

In general, it is possible to outline that 1972 and 2007 editions of EJ are completely different for several reasons. First, the contemporary version incorporates a material focused on women, which means that women improved their roles and obligations in the world. From this point of view, it is possible to find many articles dedicated to the evaluation of relations involving women. In addition, 2007 version of EJ reflects womens rights through the prism of historical events, which had a great influence on the destiny of the contemporary women. In general, the Jewish history obtained an increase in a fundamental way of reflecting the events. It means that the role of women throughout historical events helped in shaping the full picture of the human relations composition.

Conclusion

In general, the discussed articles have a comprehensive nature, which proves that marriage has a long history. In particular, both articles provide readers with a focus on women and their roles in marriage. However, one of the articles reflects the essence of obligations, while the other one explains the historical events which shaped the contemporary traditions in marriage. In general, it is possible to see that women and men have different roles, which create a balanced nature of human relations. However, women still have to strive for improving their rights in order to obtain an improved reflection in the contemporary relations with men.
