Walgreens is the largest drug store in the USA

The company's main products are prescriptive and non-prescriptive drugs. It also sells other consumer products, like cosmetics, sanitary and household products, snacks, beverages, and small electronic items. Walgreen has 8300 stores all over the United States (Move it). Supplies for these stores are arranged through various distribution centers; one of them is Anderson facility located at South Carolina (Move it). This article describes some aspects of this distribution facility.

Anderson distribution facility covers an area of 7,000 square foot with four warehouses

It supplies products to 800 different Walgreen stores. Items from various producers arrive at the Anderson facility, where workers sort them out in different shipping packages, which are transported to different Walgreens stores. To give an idea of the magnitude of the amount of products and services per day, VP Randy Lewis described that all pallets stacked together would make 3 miles stretch; all combined cases would make 35 miles; while all mileage that trailers travel to supply the products would be one and half times of the diameter of the earth. Anderson distribution facility has applied a unique approach that is expressed in the use of disabled and non-disabled workers together. They do the same work standing side by side. On July 2, 2012, in an interview the VP Randy Lewis mentioned to NBC’s Mika Brzezinski that Anderson is the newest and most efficient facility where 40 percent of workers are mentally and physically disable (Gsmooth). This was the first attempt in the United States to use disable people in supply chain and logistic related works.  Anderson facility is an example that proved that the use of high level technology and disabled workers would contribute the same yield if replaced by non-disable workers.

Thus, Anderson facility has become a model for other large stores like Loews, Best Buy, and Procter & Gambles. Anderson facility has opened the door for the disabled people to earn a living and be self-sufficient.  There are no “Them”; just “Us”, mentioned by the VP Randy Lewis about the use of this new concept at the Walgreens Anderson distribution facility (Move it).
